How to use the Collision Analysis Tool

Collision Date
Use these options to specify a data range for your search.

Start Date/Time (Required) - Enter the starting date or click on the calendar icon to select a date from
the date picker. You may also select a starting hour from the list, this is optional, the default is 12:00 AM (Midnight). NOTE: There is no
data available prior to November 14, 2013.

End Date/Time (Required) - Enter the ending date or click on the calendar icon to select a date from
the date picker. You may also select an ending hour from the list, this is optional, the default is 12:00 AM (Midnight). The ending date must
be later than or equal to the starting date.

Day of Week - This allows you to limit your search to specific days of the week, all days are selected by default.

Time of Day From/To - These selections allow you to limit your search to a specific timeframe within each day. By default there is no limit.
If you select a Time of Day From you must also select a Time of Day To which must be later than Time of Day From.

Collision Location
Use these options to specify location criteria for your search.

Roadway Type - Select the jursidiction, this is the category of roadway.
- State Road: State Routes and Interstates
- County Road: Roads outside of a city limit within a county
- City Street: Roads within city limits
- Miscellaneous Trafficway: Parking lots, private driveways, trails and parks

Agency Type - This allows you to limit your search to a specific law enforcement agency type. This is optional, if you do not make a selection
then all agency types are included in the search.

County, City or Statewide (Required) - These selections allow you to limit your search to a specific
geographical area. You must select at least one option. Checking Statewide will override any County and/or City selections.

Primary Trafficway - To limit your search to a specific roadway, enter the name of the roadway. There are a wide variety of ways in which
officers/agencies may enter this data, Interstate 5 may be entered as 005, I-5, I5, Interstate 5, SB I-5, NB 5, etc.
To accomodate these variances, this field allows the use of wildcards to refine your search. The wildcard character is an asterisk (*) and is used to
substitute for zero or more characters in a search expression. For example: entering I*5 will search for "I5", "I 5" or "I-5". You may use multiple
wildcards in this field.

Secondary Trafficway - Use this field to limit your search to a specific intersection or near a specific area. This field allows the use
of wildcards to refine your search, the wildcard character is an asterisk (*).

Block/Milepost Begin - Use this field to limit your search to a specific block or milepost. Entries must be numeric. For State Roads, you can
enter mileposts. For City Streets, you can enter block numbers. County Roads can be searched using either mileposts or block numbers.

Milepost End - Use this field to limit your search to collisons within a specific range of mileposts. Entries must be numeric. If you enter
Milepost End you must also enter Milepost Begin. Milepost End must be a value greater than Milepost Begin. This entry is
ignored if the Block option is selected.

Block/MilePost - Use this option to specify whether you are searching based on a Block or Milepost, Block is the default selection.

School Zone - Check this box to limit your search to only collisions which occured within a school zone.
-
Intersection Related - Check this box to limit your search to only collisions which occured at an intersection of two or more roadways.

Collision Situation
Use these options to specify general collision detail criteria for your search.

Motor Vehicles Involved - Check this box to limit your search to collisions which involve motor vehicles. This option is selected by default.
If this box is not checked your search will be limited to only those collisions which DO NOT involve motor vehicles.

Number of Vehicles Involved - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions involving a specific number of motor vehicles. This selection is
ignored if the Motor Vehicles Involved option is not checked.

Passenger Involvement - Use this selection to limit your search to only those collisions where passengers are or are not involved. If no selection is made
the search will return results regardless of whether or not passengers are involved. This selection is ignored if the Motor Vehicles Involved option is not checked.

Commercial Carrier Involvement - Use this selection to limit your search to only those collisions where commercial carriers are or are not involved. If no
selection is made the search will return results regardless of whether or not commercial carriers are involved. This selection is ignored if the Motor Vehicles
Involved option is not checked.

School Bus Involvement - Use this selection to limit your search to only those collisions where school buses are or are not involved. If no selection is
made the search will return results regardless of whether or not school buses are involved. This selection is ignored if the Motor Vehicles Involved option
is not checked.

Pedestrian(s) Involved - Check this box to limit your search to only collisions where pedestrians are involved. If this box is not checked your
search will be limited to only those collisions which DO NOT involve pedestrians.

Pedal Cyclist(s) Involved - Check this box to limit your search to only collisions where cyclists are involved. If this box is not checked your
search will be limited to only those collisions which DO NOT involve cyclists.

Weather Condition - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions which occurred when specific weather conditions were present.
-
Lighting Condition - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions which occurred when specific lighting conditions were present.
-
Injury Severity - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions where the most severe injury incurred by any involved person
matches the specific selection.

Collision Type - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions of a specific type such as turning, backing, sideswipe, etc.

Object Struck - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions which involved striking a specific object.

Damage Threshold Met - Check this box to limit your search to only collisions meeting the minimum state threshold criteria for reporting
a collision. This option is selected by default. If this box is not checked your search will be limited to only those collisions which DO NOT
meet the damage threshold.

Motor Vehicle
Use these options to enter specific criteria for your search regarding motor vehicles, drivers and passengers.

Vehicle Style - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions involving a specific type of motor vehicle such as passenger car, truck,
motorcycle, etc.

Vehicle Action - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions involving a specific motor vehicle action such as turning, backing,
changing lanes, etc.

Driver Age From - Use this field to limit your search to collisions involving drivers of a specific age. Entries must be a numeric value between 15 and
100 inclusive.

Driver Age To - Use this field to limit your search to collisons involving drivers within a specific age range. Entries must be a numeric value between 15
and 100. If you enter Age To you must also enter Age From. Age To must be a value greater than Age From.

Driver Gender Male/Female - Use these options to limit your search to collisons involving drivers of a specific gender. You must select at least
one option.

Driver Restraint Type - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions involving drivers using a specific type of restraint such as shoulder belt, lap belt,
none, etc.

Driver Air Bag Type - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions involving drivers with a specific type of air bag such as front, side,
other, etc.

Driver Helmet Used - Use this selection to limit your search to only those collisions where drivers were or were not wearing a helmet. If no
selection is made the search will return results regardless of whether the driver was wearing a helmet or not.

Driver Contributing Circumstance(s) - Use these selections to limit your search to collisions which involve a specific set of circumstance(s). A
collision report may contain up to three contributing circumstances, however most collision reports only contain one contributing circumstance.
You may use the Ctrl+Click keys to select more than one circumstance.

Circumstances And / Or - When selecting multiple circumstances you may select the And option for collision reports containing ALL of the selected circumstances.
Selecting the Or option will return collisions that match ANY one of the selected circumstances. The OR option is the default choice.
These choices have no effect when only one circumstance is selected.

Driver Injury Severity - Use these selections to limit your search to collisions which involve a specific injury severity to a driver.
You may use the Ctrl+Click keys to select more than one injury severity.

Driver Alcohol Involved - Check this box to limit your search to only collisions where the driver was under the influence of alcohol. This option is
not selected by default. If this box is not checked the search will ignore this option and include collisions regardless of whether the driver was impaired.

Driver Cannabis Involved - Check this box to limit your search to only collisions where the driver was under the influence of cannabis/marijuana. This
option is not selected by default. If this box is not checked the search will ignore this option and include collisions regardless of whether the driver was
impaired.

Driver Drugs Involved - Check this box to limit your search to only collisions where the driver was under the influence of drugs (other than cannabis/marijuana).
This option is not selected by default. If this box is not checked the search will ignore this option and include collisions regardless of whether the driver
was impaired.

Passenger Age From - Use this field to limit your search to collisions involving passengers of a specific age. Entries must be a numeric value between 15 and
100 inclusive.

Passenger Age To - Use this field to limit your search to collisons involving passengers within a specific age range. Entries must be a numeric value between 15
and 100. If you enter Age To you must also enter Age From. Age To must be a value greater than Age From.

Passenger Gender Male/Female - Use these options to limit your search to collisons involving passengers of a specific gender. You must select at least
one option.

Passenger Restraint Type - Use this selection to limit your search to collisions involving passengers using a specific type of restraint such as shoulder belt, lap belt,
none, etc.

Passenger Seating Position - Use this selection to limit your search to passengers occupying a specific location within the motor vehicle such as
Right Front, Left Rear, Outside of Vehicle, etc.

Passenger Helmet Used - Use this selection to limit your search to only those collisions where the passengers were or were not wearing a helmet. If no
selection is made the search will return results regardless of whether the passenger was wearing a helmet or not.

Passenger Injury Severity - Use these selections to limit your search to collisions which involve a specific injury severity to passenger(s) in the vehicle.
You may use the Ctrl+Click keys to select more than one injury severity.

Pedestrian
Use these options to enter specific criteria for your search regarding pedestrians.

Pedestrian Age From - Use this field to limit your search to collisions involving pedestrians of a specific age. Entries must be a numeric value between 15 and
100 inclusive.

and 100. If you enter Age To you must also enter Age From. Age To must be a value greater than Age From.

Output Format
Use this options to specify the output format for your search.

Tabular - Select this format to display the data on screen in a tabular (Rows and Columns) format. You will be able to drill-down to detailed collision information regarding
motor vehicles, drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists by clicking on the links within each record. You can export the data to an Excel spreadsheet where
it can be sorted and/or filtered.

Map - Select this format to display the data on screen overlayed on a map. You will be able to drill-down to detailed information regarding a specific
collision by clicking on a marker on the map.
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What data is available in the Collision Analysis Database?
A: The Collision Analysis Database contains data from November 14, 2013 onward. All collision reports submitted by law enforcement officers received by the
Washington State Patrol will be available for query in the database.

Q: Why can’t I sort the results of my query?
A: You cannot sort the information in your results until you export it into Microsoft Excel.

Q: How do I search for a specific location?
A: When searching for a specific location, you must enter a Jurisdiction and select a County, City or Statewide. After selecting a county, the city list
will be filtered to show only the cities within the selected county.

Q: Why do collision reports begin with an E?
A: There are two types of collision reports. Reports completed on the paper Police Traffic Collision Report (PTCR) and mailed to WSP will contain a seven
digit report number, i.e. 1234567. Reports submitted electronically will begin with an "E", i.e. E123456.
